Just after Amy Whitehouse died, there were comparisons of her to artists like Etta James and Billie Holiday....but I'm afraid she was a pale comparison with both of them....especially Billie...the only real comparison is that they both died relatively young from alcohol related problems. Anyway, all comparisons are subjective and I personally don't think Amy was in the same league.

Another of the great female jazz/blues singers from the 40/50's. Dinah Washington was a huge star in her day and was yet another who died early from substance abuse in 1963 at the age of 39.

Another song from the "Tea for the Tillerman" album. Shamelessly ripped off by some nondescript boy band without any attempt at a fresh interpretation.

The original and best version by the composer

You and me both!

I only had to travel as far as Buxton last Thursday night to have an outstanding three hour evening watching The Oli Brown Band, followed by the legendary John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, though.

It's out there!

The genre of the pop song is sometimes neglected...including by me...but when you get a real quality songwriter, musicians and production team in harmony, the end result can be very good. Del Amitri are such a band...formed in Glasgow in the 80/90's, they are real quality.

One of the best known Beethoven pieces, the 2nd movement "allegretto" from his 7th Symphony. He could write a good tune could Ludo.

Good choice, cdlf. I really like Del Amitri - a very underrated band. Saw them live at the City Hall just after their Greatest Hits collection had come out. Was a really great gig. 'Roll to Me' and 'Always the Last to Know' are particular faves of mine as well.

And as for good pubs to see bands - you and Owling ought to get on up to The Greystones - has really good bands on just about every night. Its owned by Thornbridge Brewery, so the beer's top notch as well.Thumbsup

The Eagles Greatest Hits was the first LP I owned...Desperado is a fantastic song. Probably the one I sing most in the shower...BlushBigsmile

I ask you will Galway bate Mayo? Not if they have Willie Joe...they haven't a hope of beating Mayo!

Afraid not, atroi...think my singing voice is more an assault on the ears than sweet music to them! Certainly not a patch on Don Henley's.

There was a music shop that had a notice on the wall of the guitar rehearsal area begging.."Please don't play Smoke On The Water"Laugh All those budding Richie Blackmores had almost driven the staff mad with this simple but superb riff.

I think they have owling, and a lot more besides. They get a lot of folk, roots, Americana, country, blues and rock bands there - also have regular comedy and magician nights that do really well, so plenty of variety! The link below takes you to their site - tells you whats coming up. Including Wilko's 2 nights there next week. Wouldn't have minded seeing him, but I'm away both nights! Last saw him live at the Top Rank when he was playing for Ian Dury and the Blockheads about 25 years ago or so. A great character: he's been through a lot of dark and bad times since then - saw an interview with him where he detailed what had happened to him; felt like crying for him. Glad he's come through to the other side and seems to be getting it all back together now.

I saw him at the Boardwalk a couple of years ago, Baresi. He was amazing.

Here's another place worth visiting. They're very friendly and welcoming: it's a locals' promotion in the modern community centre. I won their raffle on my first visit. Blush
