Sometimes, it's the song itself that's the"Star"...when Hoagy Carmichael wrote this song in 1927, he couldn't have envisaged it would become one of the most recorded songs in history with over 1500 artists, and still counting, having seen it's merit. This version by Artie Shaw is regarded by many as the definitive one from the big band swing era.

Crap performance and result today...need to chill out with a bit of cool jazz and a drink. It doesn't get much cooler than this...a craftsman at his trade playing with brilliant dissonance.

Remeber reading an interview with the late Captain Beefheart where he told of an occasion that he saw Thelonious Monk perform. Apparently Monk walked on stage, sat down, played one note, then walked off again. Beefheart said "And you know what? He played the right note! The right note!"

He may well have been the only person in the audience who thought that. He was a bit of a wild mind, was the Captain.

I ask you will Galway bate Mayo? Not if they have Willie Joe...they haven't a hope of beating Mayo!

What a god the Captain was! This is one of his more accessible songs, from the "Clear Spot" album.

A 1978 hit for Lindisfarne, a folk/rock band from Newcastle who had re-formed after splitting up in 1976.

Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream,
It is not dying, it is not dying

Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void,
It is shining, it is shining.

Yet you may see the meaning of within
It is being, it is being

Love is all and love is everyone
It is knowing, it is knowing

The Flying Burrito Brothers were not very well known in their own time but have since become regarded as one of the founders of the country rock genre. Originally founded by two ex members of the Byrds, the direct lineage goes all the way to the Eagles who took the genre to the very top.

I see the Dylan gestapo have been combing Youtube again...eradicating anything Bob they can find. However, Percy Verance can always find a way round them.
