Just imagine....you've never been to an opera before...you take your seat, the curtain opens and the orchestra play this prelude. You just know you're in for a treat.

Also responsible for this fantastic song when he was with Ace

and (even though Owling got in with it first) this when he was with Squeeze - always reminds me of when I left home to live in the big city...

Fantastic singer and a big Wednesdayite...and wrote "It's a praise for Sheffield Wednesday" to boot - top man.

A few years ago I was taking the scenic route down to Stoke for a Boxing Day fixture, it was a lovely day and the scenery was wonderful and I had "Sticky Fingers" blasting out on the stereo. We had a stonking win that day and I've always associated the album with good times at football. Well...now would seem to be a good time to bring back those good times starting with our game at Rochdale tomorrow.

Come on you blue and white WIZZARDS.

I love that run down there, across Dovedale and hang a left, whether it's them or Port Vale. Down under Ramshaw Rocks and The Roaches / Hen Cloud. I've done it in snow, sun and both together and even had to stop for a sodding fox hunt one year.

Paul Carrack was at one of my best nights out ever - a testimonial dinner & dance for Nigel Worthington at Baldwins Omega. We'd whacked Liverpool 3-1 earlier that day, so we were all in a great mood anyway, but the night exceeded our expectations. All the legends were there - Waddle, Shez, Hirsty, Carlton, Kingy, Big Nige, and the larger than life Mel Sterland. Paul was there just as a guest, but got up to brilliantly sing an impromptu setload of Tamla Motown classics with the band. The place went wild and was totally rocking off the scale. A great, great, great night. Woke up the following afternoon with a massive smile on my face; could hardly believe I'd been there.

Carole King is, IMO the best female singer, songwriter to come out of America. Together with her husband Gerry Goffin, they produced dozens of songs for her and many other artists. This is from her best album "Tapestry" released in 1971. The album is pure quality from the first note to the last.

Apart from 'Smackwater Jack'. Blush BTW, I was going to argue with you until I remembered that Joni Mitchell is Canadian.

I bought the album shortly after it came out. Everyone seemed to have it back then. Later, I realised that 'it wasn't cool' so I sold it at Violet May's place.

Eight or ten years later I bought it again on a cassette tape of entirely dubious origin, when I was living in the middle east. Erm

Still got it somewhere.

I loved hearing the story of how she wrote 'Do the locomotion' at the piano but had no inspiration as to who to sell it to: who could make it a chart hit. Then she heard her cleaner singing it whilst vacuuming. Ding! The cleaner became 'Little Eva' and a massive hit followed. Cool

Carole Kingīs "tapestry" was recommended decades ago by an australian penfriend i had .....and never disappointed since . And Joni : for me she is more of a short stories narrator , who weaves her stories into music. I have always admired Katherine Mansfield and now (Iīm just reading Lahiriīs unaccostumed earth...great stories, btw.) Lahiri for their ability to tell stories in only some pages, yet being able to give characters a rich life, a good personification, maybe even depths in simplicities , that this form of fiction is special.
And Joni can do that as well ....a real artist.
oh, btw, I canīt listen to the last song....which is it?

A nod to Carol King in the words to that and another big one on that album.

What a voice.

Violet May's was a second hand record shop...you could sell or exchange your unwanted vinyl and it was a proper Aladdins cave.

She started out with a market stall and was so successful with her simple formula - you could pay the marked price for her second hand records or return two of your own and she would let you choose one of hers: Simples! - that she moved up to a proper shop.

She died a long time ago, I imagine. It's the 1960's and '70's that I'm remembering.

I wish I still had some of the ones I traded in. Unhappy
