Bakewell is a nice place you'd like it...but there's not much in the way of decent eateries there. Mainly cafes and pub grub for the weekend and market visitors. Don't know much about Birchover.

that inn, Andyben wrote about, looks like it has some tasty food, cdlf. And maybe combining some football in the PL ;-) with some vacation in the Peak district might be a great idea.

The Packhorse Inn at Little Longstone and the White Lion in Great Longstone both do fantastic food - both three or four miles from Bakewell

Never had a bottle of Moldovan wine before until last night. Merry Monk Merlot from the Acsoni winery is excellent. Smooth as a baby's bum and very quaffable.
About 7/8 a bottle and I think Lidl may stock it.

In a previous job, a colleague's wife was marketing manager at Laithwaites, I used to get wine by the box at staff prices. my favourite was a Moldovan white sauvignon blanc, it blew the french stuff away!!

Haven't dined out much over the summer...unless you count hospital food, but have been out a few times recently. Have mostly revisited tried and trusted places but went to a new one last week. Marco Pierre Whites New York Italian restaurant down at the old cop shop on West Bar Green is a very large swanky restaurant...maybe a 100 covers and is very nicely done out...no expense spared. The menu is expansive and the service is quite formal yet personal.
It's a bit on the pricy side and the wine list is quite frankly a piss take...but most of them are at it nowadays. I had a steak and Mrs Leftfoot had lamb that she was very impressed with. My Ribeye was vaguely disappointing because I'd tried to pre-guess the chef's interpretation of medium rare and ordered a medium steak instead, as the former usually arrives mostly rare. But this particular chef cooked it medium and then gave it another minute or so. The net result was that it was a bit too dry for my taste...but only myself to blame.
Would give it another go though it probably won't get on my regular list because of the pricing.

Yes Herod.....cheapest around the 20 quid mark and it IS cheap. Hence my comment.

An American interpretation of an Italian restaurant by a half Frenchman from Leeds, what could go wrong?
