Just back from 3 days in Hawkshead in the Lakes. Stayed at the Queens Head Inn, ate there first night, the food was way over seasoned? I had mussels that required buckets of water to digest!

2nd and third nights we went to the Sun, which was much better. We has fajitas on day 1 which were very good. 2nd day we had a sharing curry dish which was vegetarian. It came with a veg masala, paratha bread, onion bhaji a cumin onion salad and a veg Pandora type thing. The whole dish was washed down with a Chilean Merlot which wasn't over expensive.

If you find yourself over in Hawkshead, the Queens is good to stay at but eat at the Sun.

And next time you're in Hawkshead, say hello to the acting, part time, sub-post master there. His name's Malc, he's a Sheffielder and an Owl.

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

I haven't posted on this thread for over a year now. This is because we have tended to dine at tried and trusted places in recent times and not been anywhere worthy of special mention, or of special condemnation....until this last Sunday that is.

We were out and about in Castleton on Sunday and had planned to go home and cook dinner ourselves but something cropped up so we decided instead to go for a Sunday lunch. We went in The Castle pub, an Innkeepers Lodge, part of the Vintage Inns group. Inside it is very comfortable and homely and the Lunch menu talks up a good dinner with their "21 day aged Sirloin of Beef" We were hungry so who could resist such a tempting offer.

When it came, my first reaction was that there didn't seem to be a lot of meat on the plate with two thin slices lying on top of a selection of roasted potatoes, carrots, parsnips and butternut squash with a Yorkshire on the side.

The meat was terrible...it was laced throughout with gristle and the worst piece was the one "hidden" under the other. I'd estimate that about only 30% of it was edible. The roasted vegetables were becoming chewy...the consistency you get when they've been standing for an hour or so and then reheated.

Now, my wife is one of those who doesn't like to kick up a fuss in a restaurant, so I waited until the waiter came to take away the plates. He picked them up and was about to just whisk them away despite it being obvious that three quarters of the half chewed meat had been left on the plate...so I called him back and asked him to tell the chef about the meat he'd served us. He shrugged and disappeared without a word. We sat drinking our wine and about 15 minutes later a huge fat girl ambled out of the kitchen and said "Chef says you didn't like your meat, do you want a coffee or summat"

I declined the offer and we paid our bill and left.

So, my advice is to give this establishment a wide birth if your in the Castleton area, it's rubbish.

Used to regularly go to another Vintage Inns Pub, The Golden Ball, Whiston, but stopped going after they stopped serving quality food and starting dishing up plates I'd expect in Wetherspoons

Well, here we are stuck int'ouse Sad No more dining out for some time and nowt better to do than watch telly and look at porn while we are self inebriating. So, just a word on GinSmile, my weapon of choice.
If like me, you like an occasional G&T then do try Geyson's London Gin (37.5%) It's Aldi's own brand and is really superb value for money at just £14.19p for a litre. It's won loads of awards and is the base product of a whole range of other craft gins. I do like Tanqueray(43.1%) but it's hard to justify paying circa £24 a litre when the own brand is £10 cheaper.

Good health.Thumbsup

Sounds like a better bet to spend it on more booze and let your own senses tell you what it tastes like.

Morrisons supermarket are doing special deals on restaurant quality food that the farmers can't shift because restaurants are closed. Went down and got joints of fillet, ribeye, scallops, monk fish and some really thick lamb chops that we had on the barbecue yesterday for less than half price. When it's gone it's gone.

Got a fresh Dover Sole for £6, easily big enough for the two of us. Cooked it simple "a la meunière" in a brown butter sauce. This lockdown is OK. Smug
