Seems Smith still might not have much say in transfer dealings.
Villa have appointed Juan Garcia Pitarch as Sporting Director.
He's officially tasked with bringing in a 'one way of working' through the club, from the juniors upwards.
Done a similar role at Valencia and Atletico Madrid, and was also in charge of transfer negotiations where 90% of his business was with one particular sporting company.
Might just be a coincidence or it could be that Doyen have found another cash cow

Like others be interesting to see how Smith gets on. Earned the right after what he has managed to achieve at Brentford. Whatever the pros and cons of the moneyball system he has got them playing well for a few years. Would certainly have seen him here after CC

Happy clapping for 4 years more than Emre

100% agree, think I said after our last two trips to Brentford, we could have done a lot worse than bring him back in the coach with us

Smith was previously excellent at Walsall, too.

I'm a bit disappointed he's joined Villa. Not sure why. Plain

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

Because the club's a bit of a basket case, the appointment of the assistant is clearly not his choice and likely who they want to be in charge further down the line and in all honesty it's probably likely to all go wrong and he doesn't deserve it?

Can’t wait for Sky to broadcast Frank Lampard’s Derby v Not Quite John Terry’s Villa.

They're showing a much bigger game that weekend

1 win in 15, it was kind of inevitable, glad we didn't take a punt on him, but feel bad for the fella. Shrewsbury would probably have him back mind

Kind of gives you a good idea on how well Dingle Mick did there to keep them afloat.

The thing is though, take a look at his CV and he's basically a walking definition of "young English manager who's had success at lower levels", promotions with three different non-league clubs, then turning one of the smallest clubs in League One into promotion contenders. I'm not sure whether the Championship is just a very big step up (wasn't for Wilder unfortunately), or Ipswich's squad is just not good enough for the Championship. I suspect it's more the latter, which (through gritted teeth) does make Sam Eagle look good.

Shame for Hurst really. Whether he ever gets another chance at this level is probably doubtful now
