out of curiosity - how can Coutinho play against his parent club?

Mind, he'll probably never play for them again after scoring 2

The writing was on the wall with this Barça team.

As much as Messi is one of the greatest, the supporting cast, by top table terms is not close at all. I look at the Barça and Real teams and question how many of their players get in a City, Liverpool, Bayern, and even a Man Utd team.

Just on Bayern, they started a bit of a rebuild last season after Liverpool tore them to pieces. And they have an incredible academy. It’s between them and City in terms of who wins it.

And obviously, over here Lewandowski is a hero. And to think that Blackburn turned him down (like they did Zidane in the mid 90’s).

A bit like us turning down: Schmeichel (Big Ron), Stam (and Cantona) Francis, Shevchenko (Pleat)

Nothing will ever beat the pigs turning Maradona down though Salute

As big as Podolski...

Didn't the Iceland volcano stop his transfer and the Germans swooped in

It wasn't Shevchenko.

It was Cernechenko (sp) the full back thi k he played against Real Madrid for us on trial.

Cernechenko played on trial under Francis didn’t he?

We were offered Shevchenko at £4m but Pleat didn’t go for it as he was 19 at the time.

The full back who we trialled against Real was listed as Chernikov but that wasn't his real name.
The real Chernikov was a forward with a second tier team in Moscow. That's why everyone wondered why the fuck Trev was playing him at full back.

The lad we played was Dmitri Galiamin. A Russian full back who was in his last season at Espanol when this game took place. I think the dodgy performance made Francis mind up but he did make the Russian World Cup squad that year. Only played about 20 mins in a group game though.
He ended up at newly promoted Merida in their first season in La Liga. They went bust 5 years later.

So that'll be the origin of the 'we had Shevchenko on trial and played him at full back' myth.

Probably the case. We never had Shevchenko on trial, Pleat was offered him for £4m allegedly and decided it was less of a gamble to sign Kovacevic and Stefanovic for a combined £4.5m instead.
