Steven Fletcher scored twice in four minutes as Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to leapfrog Brentford and move into the Championship's play-off places.

Fletcher cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo's opener for Brentford from the penalty spot after Rico Henry's handball and then fired his 10th goal of the season past David Raya to give Wednesday victory.

Mbeumo had headed the Bees in front from a first-half corner to take his season's tally to six goals and Thomas Frank's side were good value for their lead at the interval.

The Owls, though, bossed the second half and Fletcher went close on three occasions before his double ensured back-to-back wins and moved Garry Monk's side up to sixth.

Relive Saturday's EFL action

Brentford slipped to ninth, missing their own chance to move into the play-off spots, as they paid the price for failing to make the most of their first-half superiority.

The Bees controlled the opening 45 minutes but only had one goal to show for it as Mbeumo volleyed a Henry cross wide before glancing home Josh Dasilva's corner to open the scoring.

But Wednesday - embroiled in a row with the English Football League over the legality of the sale of Hillsborough to owner Dejphon Chansiri - put aside their off-pitch issues to mount a strong second-half fightback.

Fletcher sent an acrobatic volley just off target and a header wide from Barry Bannan's cross, as well as seeing a fierce strike turned aside by Bees keeper Raya in between.

But the Scotland striker rolled Wednesday level from the spot, straight down the middle, after Henry carelessly handled a centre from Kadeem Harris, whose cross was then controlled and tucked home by Fletcher to complete the turnaround.

Brentford rallied in the closing stages and had chances to snatch a point but Mbeumo, Said Benrahma and Henry all fizzed efforts off target from varying ranges.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"The first half wasn't acceptable and we spoke about that at half time and then the second half was what we expect.

"The attitude was completely different, we got our rewards and credit to the players for taking that on board and turning it around.

"I think you saw the determination from the team to fight back and I thought we were outstanding after half time."

Brentford manager Thomas Frank:

"We lacked quality and decision-making and that extra good touch or pass to make it two-nil.

"Then after the equaliser from a strange penalty, we needed to stay in the game. We were absolutely sleeping from that quick throw-in.

"We knew that they wanted to put crosses in the box, we knew that Stephen Fletcher is a good striker so that goal is a very disappointing moment because I think 1-1 would still have been a good result here.

"In general, when you play so well in the first half you want at least a point, but football matches are 90 minutes and we need to do well enough over those 90 minutes but we didn't do that today."

First time in 2 and a half years we’ve come from behind to win apparently

Well done the Owls...

Great result and a decent second half performance.

KM got it right with his half time summary.

Hutchinson ran his blood to water.

Nice to see Rhodes play a part, not just being on the pitch but actually making us more of a threat.

Two wins on the bounce after some pretty poor results. Let’s keep it up. Two difficult away games to come.

We started the game really well but after about 6 or 7 minutes there was a break in play after Hutch nailed one of their players with a great tackle on the edge of the box. We seemed to completely lose our impetus from that and to be fair Brentford looked a class act at times for the rest of the first half.

Great stuff in the second half and we just kept plugging away. As others have said Fletch and Nuhiu wasn’t working today so fair play for changing it at half time. I would imagine Brentford fans are wondering how they didn’t come away with something. It was a bit seat of the pants in the last few minutes and that effort from Benrahma was a bit close for comfort.

Still, a great win against a good side. Hutch MoM for me, I thought he was everywhere today.

If it wasn’t for Hutch in the first half we may have been dead and buried.

Very good second half and a well deserved victory. Proper happy tonight.

Hutch was magnificent

Only problem with Rhodes' better display was one or two nightmare 20 yard headers back deep into midfield that dropped us right in it. Please stop doing that!

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

Fletcher and Rhodes probably deserves a few full games on the second half performance.

We'll stick with two wingers but do we split the middle two into more of a diamond or leave as is?

I'd prefer to see one of Lee and Luongo (or reach??) playing and getting up with and beyond them, then Bannan and Hutch

Just home after another interesting trip to sunny Hillsborough.

My mate picked me up at Meadowhall, so I was able to see parts of Sheffield I hadn't before - Wincobank, Shiregreen and Firth Park (?). All good stuff.

After popping into the NBT, it was on to the match. As pretty much everyone has said, good first 10 / 15 minutes then fell out of things. Brentford played it around very well but Cameron Dawson didn't really have a save to make that I can remember.

Second half much better. The close scares at the end were always going to happen. Very pleased we survived!

Onwards to Wednesday night and hopefully another 3 points... Smile

It was like he either hadn't realised we weren't kicking to the kop second half or it was that long since he'd played, he thought we were in our bartercard away kit still.

We'd win the league with Rico Henry at left back.

£50k from Walsall IIRC.
