Spent a while following some of the supposed best tipster sites, who all allegedly had great contacts within the racing industry and inside knowledge. They were generally shite and averaged about a 10-20% success rate at best, despite making out it was much higher. Quite often they'd notify of 5 tipped horses for the same race - which basically showed they really knew no more than your average punter. You're as well off looking at the form yourself, making your own choices and losing your money through your own poor decisions.

I'm probably one of the few on here who has had in depth insider knowledge of tipping and punters because I was for many years Racing Manager at various greyhound stadia. I was the guy that actually graded the card and it was my job to know every detail about every dog and of course I also had intimate knowledge of the trainers and what they were doing. I usually had about a 60% win ratio with my forecasts...but of course I was not allowed to bet being licensed by the NGRC. I used to go on the local radio to give an insight into each weeks racing and my "Tip for tonight" was about 75% right as I was only picking one out of ten races. I suppose I could have "earned" a living betting professionally but was never interested in gambling and even to this day the only wager I ever have is a couple of quid on the lottery.

I trust you don't have a 60 - 75% success rate on that?!

I've had a free go four times on the bounce but my biggest touch was a massive £139 Bounce

Once got told by a bloke hovering round the kennels that a particular race had been fixed and then he told us the dogs that were going to come first and second...of course we ignored him and of course they romped home.

Never could decide if he was right or if he was just lucky...

Went to Hyde Park dogs one night in the 80s with my old boss
He said “we’ll buy old Jack a double whiskey and he’ll give us a certain winner”
So we did and he did at 4/1
Not sure why we never went again

I'm probably being really thick here but is it possible to fix a dog race?

I can see how it could happen with horses, given that jockeys can influence the kind of run it has but dogs? What do they do? Put arsenic in its Marrowbone?

They try, or they used to. Couple of mates used to run their dogs at Hyde Park. One particular dog was decent and after backing it numerous times it kept coming in second. So at one meeting they stuffed it with food and backed against it and it flew home.

You're right about horse racing. I'm always reminded about a six horse race in which a trainer told his jockey to ease his mount back because they were going to have a go in his next outing.

The jockey held his mount and came home fourth about 3 lengths behind the winner. The trainer asked him how he'd been and the jockey told him. I had a helluva job to keep him back and I could have taken the first three anytime...but I don't know about the two behind me.

As for dogs, yes it's possible. Messing about with a dog's weight is one way and getting him at it with a kill is another. For clarity Hyde Park was a "Flap track" which meant that it was largely unregulated. Owlerton was and still is a licensed track and the rules of racing and their enforcement are quite rigid. However, if someone is determined to cheat they will...it's just that if they do they run the risk of being banned from all tracks.

Kevin Na came 4th @100/1. I had him each way and they were paying first 9 so although I lost a few quid he limited the damage.

https://www.swfc.co.uk/news/2020/july/owl s-welcome-wednesday-bet--play-free-tonigh t/

The Owls are pleased to announce a brand new partnership with Wednesday Bet, the unique app in which supporters predict the outcome of select SWFC markets to win a share of a cash prize pool from every game.

A minimum £1,000 is guaranteed, and the more fans who enter, the higher the pool will grow.

Wednesday Bet launches in time for the season finale against Middlesbrough and, as an introductory offer, supporters can play for FREE tonight to have the chance of winning the £1,000 prize pool.

Wednesday Bet is brought to you by Low6, who have presented the app into a broad section of sports, including football, horse racing and darts. Co-founder Jamie Mitchell, a lifelong Wednesdayite and Hillsborough Season Ticket holder, told swfc.co.uk:

“We are delighted to announce our partnership with the Owls. The Wednesday Bet app is fun and easy to play, with fans betting on what they know most about - Sheffield Wednesday!

“Wednesday Bet is unlike traditional sports betting sites, there are no odds presented before games. Instead, every match offers a series of questions, from which fans predict the outcome for the chance to win the prize pool.

“The unique selling point of the app is that selections don’t even have to be correct – the winner just has to predict more correct answers than everyone else to take the top prize.”

The Owls’ Commercial Director Liam Dooley added: “We are excited for the launch of Wednesday Bet and our partnership with Jamie and his team at Low6. Revenue is channelled directly back into the club and with a £1,000 prize guaranteed from every Wednesday game, it really is win-win!”

The Wednesday Bet App is available now for both iOS and Android devices and supporters can place their first FREE bet ahead of tonight’s game against Middlesbrough.
