After Forest and last night I don't think we can look forward to remaining home games with much confidence. I think it will be away from home that gets us the points we need.

I thought WBA were garbage 1st half. I think we had 7 corners to their zero? However, we didn't really threaten and there wasn't much fluidity.
Our performance 2nd half was dire and it must have been one of WBA's easiest victories. I know Harris hit the post but the only real effort on goal which worried Johnstone was in injury time. When are we going to get a winger who can cross a ball?

Well, it can't be this season when we add to the squad, so I'd suggest maybe we'll add someone in the 'off season'..... Smile

Where you play is totally irrelevant at the moment

I have seen better West Brom teams for sure - they were a better footballing unit last season. Taken the more pragmatic approach this season - but can't see them troubling the Premier League unless they get a few new recruits

Happy clapping for 4 years more than Emre

West Brom are a classic Promotion team, probably in the mould of Burnley and Brighton over recent years. Strong in all key areas and pretty resilient as well as conversant in the darker arts.

Getting the first goal was key for us last night. We huffed and puffed and actually had some decent approach play last night but sadly missing that cutting edge. A crowd last night may have helped us.

We are down to the bare bones and felt for Moses last night as thought he had had a decent game up to the penalty. Must admit I thought he was a great signing and one I had hoped for since he starred for Hull but unfortunately it has not happened.

One to take on the chin and move on to Sunday when hopefully Borner will have recovered and maybe Windass back on the bench.

Sums up my feelings perfectly.

Don't get the hate for MO, for a right full back playing on the left side of a central 3 against a team looking certs for automatic promotion he did well, think Walks is right and he's just the latest boo boy. Shame really as he's got the sort of experience we need given where we're supposed to be wanting to get to...

The only trouble they'll see is their own, in trying to stay up with that squad. They'd need some MAJOR investment in the playing squad.

https://www.swfc.co.uk/news/2020/july/car ry-forward-the-positives/

With the Owls set to make a swift return to action this weekend, Garry Monk is keen for his squad to dust themselves down and carry forward the positives of the past few weeks.

A 3-0 defeat against West Brom on Wednesday was a harsh outcome for Monk’s side, who were the aggressors and on the front foot in the first half.

Wednesday have six games of the season to play inside 20 days and the Owls boss wants to head into that period in confident fashion.

Next up is a trip to Swansea where his side will be looking to make it back to back wins on the road after picking up three points at Bristol City last weekend.

“I told the players straight after the game, that over the course of the three games there has been way more positives that negatives,” Monk said.

“There’s obviously things we need to get better at but that takes time.

“But for now with the quick turnovers, we can't dwell. We have done a lot of really good things in these three games. I just said that to the players at the end.

"We are creating good situations offensively.

"We looked good defensively, not so much in the second half, but we chased the game and we have to get ready to go again.”

I don't think it's "hate for MO". I kinda agree that he did some stuff well, especially given the position he was playing (why was Palmer not played on the left of the three?).

However, the penalty concession was sheer stupidity and God awful defending and he was also caught sleeping for the second goal.

Those two massive moments in the game completely changed things and, regardless of everything else, I for one would not be giving him a standing ovation at the end of the match.

I'm gonna ask KM and Tys opinion here

Re Odubajo.
I thought he was unlucky for the pen but played well in the first 45 but he's the new scapegoat, he played left side of a 3 which must be alien to him and did a lot right.

He'll have spent all of previous training sessions as Murphy's back up then he gets two days to learn how to play on his wrong side in a back 3. He's at fault for The second as he backs into no man's land while ball watching but he put in some good challenges throughout the game.

The pen
I weren't convinced re the first foul, the ref looked to his assistant who didn't seem to flag, when he awarded it he indicated the decision was through the Mike which suggests the 4th official, I didn't realise that was his remit.

I think the ear piece signal was comms from the lino, not the 4th official. 4th official has no remit on the pitch.
I don't think Odubajo should have been marking on the far post. Someone with Odubajos foul count to be picking anyone up at set pieces. He should be in the wall. That's bad tactics in my book. O'Shea bought the pen by jinking early so he got his shirt tugged. He was never getting to the ball.

The Game
They began the brighter and held the ball but we came back into it and were the better side until that decision, stats at half time showed us with 53% possession, they had 60+% after ten which shows the change in dynamics.
Thought the sub at the break wasn't the best choice as Rhodes looked livelier than he had for a while.
They managed the game well second half through cynical fouls and took their chances.
Joe will be angry with the 3rd but shouldn't make Monk swap his keepers.
At 2 I'd have perhaps given Hughes and Brennan a debut (think we had 2 changes left still).
Of the 3 games back I thought this looked the better despite the result, their side is 2nd and littered with quality like Austin and Periera so take it on the chin and move on.
Bannan needs to be taken off corners as they don't offer a threat.

Can't disagree with any of that. Brennan should have had at least a quarter of the game just to see if he could handle it. He'll be called upon at some point so give him game time. Hunt at 87mins was a waste of time. He should have been on instead of Lee.
Can't understand the Rhodes sub unless he had a tweak. He looked more lively than Wickham in the first half.
I thought Hegazzi was their main man last night. Broke a lot up and did the hard stuff for the others to look good.
There were positives from last night but I think Monk got it wrong postionally at the back and also the subs were strange. I think he was trying to put clever Bilic but that was never going to work.

How "two days to learn left side centre back" if we're being told Lees pulled up in the warm up?
Wouldn't he have had nil learning?

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

No, Fred, even Monk could see the reason for having someone on the bench that could fill in at the back - hence the additional training for Moses

Doesn't explain why he was played on his wrong side, though. We've all seen Palmer do that decently, many times.

Perhaps he thought Moses was a better fit marking the Baggie on the left than on the right, and didn't he start on the right for the first few minutes before switching?

Remember a header he won & i thought bust his arm when he fell out on the right

Reesh, on MO, he was thrown into that yesterday after Lees dropped out the day before, and by all accounts did ok. It’s a completely different position playing the left of a three versus the left of a four. And he is quite a small chap both is stature and weight, so will get exposed diagonally.

He got punished for not reacting quick enough for the pen (which was as much about O’Dowd winning it than it was about MO conceding it). He got done by movement for the second and almost got under the ball. My slight concern I have with him is his concentration levels, especially for a full back. But, what I will say is that on the ground, he was excellent and may be more suited to wing back than even Harris and Murphy.

Agree as well about giving the young kids a run at 2-0 down, would have brought them all on. Thought the Rhodes change was an odd one as he played well first 45.

My thoughts on West Brom is that they look a relatively organised team, who have some excellent players in an attacking sense but don’t look brilliant defensively - so a team that if they go up, will struggle massively. They did have a cynical edge especially at 2-0 in terms of stopping momentum which we are terrible at. They almost want the game to open up a bit so that the likes of Pereira etc can get on the ball.

I wasn’t overly distressed over what I saw from us, they just have 5 or 6 players who would walk into our team and that’s the difference at the minute. I thought we played ok for probably 55 mins. I also thought Wickham was excellent as was Harris at times.

KingMong, 02/07/2020 at 17:16

I have to disagree with you there.

Yes, he worked hard and had a battle with the centre halves but I can't think of anything of note he achieved.

Good movement in the box early doors before fluffing a free header. That apart, I can't remember him enjoying much success in the air. He even ducked out of 1 or 2 headers during the course of the game.

Attempt on target? None that I can recall.

Hold up play? Poor.

Overall, he was very well marshalled all night and definitely second best.

Not excellent!

There was a through ball to Reachy in the first half (I'm sure it was him and not Rhodes) that played Reach in quite beautifully, but that was about it...
