John Pearson has said this...

"I always remember after we lost to Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final, I walked in and Jack was crying. It just showed to me how much he cared about Sheffield Wednesday.

He was a World Cup winner, but this still mattered so much to him. And the thing is, he wasn't upset for himself, he was upset for Sheffield Wednesday, the players and the supporters."

Met him a few times mainly when he was on the " Rubber Chicken " Circuit . The first time when he was manager of Middlesborough and was guest speaker at a Sportsmans Dinner at my halls of residence . He allways had a story and would keep you amused for hours . Was a genuine decent bloke the likes we have not seen in football for some time.
RIP Big Jack

PS He was also a World Cup winner, which shouldn’t be forgotten despite the obviously far bigger achievement of turning Wednesday around.

Oh, for someone like Big Jack to walk into our club today and get hold of it by the scruff of the neck like he did.

RIP x

RIP big man.

A proper character. One of the dirtiest opponents I ever witnessed at S6 in the 1960s in a team almost full of them, but a true England legend: a word that sees far too much inappropriate use these days.
A tremendous manager, particularly at Middlesbrough in the league and Republic of Ireland. Our saviour, the man who launched the modern Wednesday.
Someone should now write THE book, with all the stories and anecdotes about him. I'd certainly buy it! What a bloke.
He wouldn't be allowed to be him, the way he was, in the emasculated football of today. They'd find a way to spoil it for him. We need more like him, not 'them'.
I hope there's good fishing where you are, Jack. God bless ya!

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

Best commentary from him at Balckburn in the Semi

"John Sheridan one of my lads plays for the Republic of Ireland "

There was a documentary back in the 80's, Steel City Blues or summat. One of the fans interviewed said something along the lines of "There wouldn,t be a Sheffield Wednesday now if it wasn't for Jack Charlton". Maybe a bit over the top, but no-one in my time supporting the club has any one individual restored pride, hope, belief and love for the football team.

The term Legend is bandied around so freely these days, its difficult to find the words to elevate the true Legends like Big Jack above the hyped up journeymen, but Jack was a true Legend in every sense of the word.

Givens. Stein. Hopkins .Elliott .Unsworth.. Heroes, one and all. Add Simonsen to the growing list
