Best commentary from him at Balckburn in the Semi

"John Sheridan one of my lads plays for the Republic of Ireland "

I must watched that a thousand times

Also "I thought that Bart-Williams was going to have a shot there"

and "Colin Hendry doesn't know what to do"Bigsmile

He's the only bloke I've ever heard whose memory for names is as bad as mine has become!

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

Like a few others on here, Big Jack was the first Wednesday manager I remember. Them were the days. The starry eyed innocence of youth. Probably not fully understanding how important each game was. We did seem to win quite often though, so that was good!

RIP.

Not everybodys thing, but if the club ever decided to raise statues to honour our past hero's, then Charlton's should be top of the list.

Don Givens second

Givens. Stein. Hopkins .Elliott .Unsworth.. Heroes, one and all. Add Simonsen to the growing list

I started watching Wednesday in the early 70s, so didn’t have a lot to shout about other than the odd relegation escape. Jack gave me my first winning team. He brought in players who became favourites like we’d had few of before in my time: Andy Mac, Bannister, Mick Lyons, TC. Under Jack, watching Wednesday was a pleasure rather than a chore. He seemed to have an empathy with the fans. Even when supposedly “remonstrating” with us with the Pat Jennings snow balls and the Oldham riot, he gave the impression that he could easily have been in the crowd with us.

Took us from heading for the fourth to heading to the first. My first proper derby (BDM), my first promotion, first cup semi. It’s a shame that his time at Wednesday is glossed over so easily by those that didn’t experience his time at Wednesday. He did as much for us as he did for Ireland. Legend, hero, top man. RIP.

Couple of things from reading these posts...

1. Just realised a lot of us are a similar age (we'll, apert from Bricat and Owling 😂)

2. Actually how Big Jack saved us.

3. The term legend is banded about too easily but Jack is definitely one.

My dad reckons Jack beat him at dominoes in wharncliffe at Firth park during the Arsenal cup games.

He asked him what the team was going to be and Jack just said see who turns up.

Apparently we only had 14 fit players!
