Thanks bri...thats a really good read. There's been loads of really good media features and articles paying tribute to Big Jack since he passed away. Almost uniformly though, his 6 years at Wednesday (and also his spell at Boro) have been regarded as minor, unimportant or even completely disregarded by the national press.

We know different though. He was brilliant for our club; he dragged it up off its arse and left us standing proudly. A great man and a great manager.

I ask you will Galway bate Mayo? Not if they have Willie Joe...they haven't a hope of beating Mayo!

As a youngster I sent a letter to Big Jack asking him if he'd get me Terry Curran's autograph - I was too young to make my own way to matches from where I lived.

He wrote back, a nice note, and with it was a programme, with the centre pages signed by all the players. Somewhere along the way I lost it.

But that says so much about the man...RIP Big Jack

Of course there are cracks, that's how the light gets in.

My Dad, took me for my dinner at the ground on the day that TC signed, I can picture him now tucking into Spag Bol in the bar.

Good read that, cheers Bricat.

Big Jack’s funeral is next Tuesday and the funeral procession is passing through his home town, Ashington, work permitting, I’ll go along and give him a salute from The Wednesday.

One story also never neither confirmed nor denied surrounded Curran's departure to THEM.

He strode into Charlton's office with the offer he'd received from the pigs in his pocket.

Throwing some paperwork down on the table Curran said to JC 'what do you think of that then?'
JC replied that he wouldn't pay it if he'd received it. Curran had chucked down a copy of his electric bill.

Then there was the time a fan sued Wednesday under the trades description act as the football that game was awful. JC sent him a cheque of his own to cover the ticket price.

We've had some fun at Hillsborough 😃

Great stuff Bri

On a real personal level the Charlton era coincided with a lot of shit going on family wise, parents divorce, step parents, step brothers and sisters, lots of change.

The ups of Sheffield Wednesday in that period gave me that escape

I remember the last one being in the paper at the time. We do seem to get some arsehole fans. One clever sod and the club's name got laughed through the national papers.
Jack did right with that.

Due to being able to retain minutiae details of 70s/80s Wednesday (whilst not having a clue about stuff that happened last season), I can tell you that the game in question was the F.A. Cup 3rd round replay in 1983 - a 2-2 draw with Southend.

Big Jack sent him a personal cheque (as already mentioned), but also told him he was no longer welcome at Hillsborough.

Tell mi mam, mi mam, I don't want no tea, no tea, I'm watching the Wednesday, tell mi mam, mi mam

I presume I went to both games v Southend

Burnley that season was my first ever away game. Then got proper man flu and missed the ruddy replay.

My over riding memory of the Jack Charlton era is therefore circumstances contriving for me not to see the pivotal games

Those 5 games against Arsenal in the 3rd round were preceded by 2 games against Scunny and 2 games against Tranmere

Only Wednesday could play 9 FA Cup proper games and not make the 4th round

So Mirocevic, do we think Jack signed him, or was it the club somehow? I just can't see Jack letting £200k be spent on a player without his involvement. Ok he was technically decent but he was hardly Glenn Hoddle and I suspect even Le Tiz put more of a shift in than our Ante. So it always puzzled me how he came to join the club whilst Jack was in charge.

I recall Ante scoring in the semi v Brighton but let's be honest most of us on here could have scored that, he shouldn't have even been on the pitch that day if it wasn't for Bailey breaking his leg. The football may have been direct but I loved Jack and his team were 100%ers, something were not always sure of these days.

If only we could find a coach with the character of Jack/ BFR and the coaching nouse of Sgt Wilko we'd be laughing. I wonder if the penny has dropped with DC that the coach can make such a big difference and even make up for a squad not being that fantastic provided they are competitive.

Here's my Big Jack story.

Was about 7 and spending the day ay my Auntie and Uncles house one Sunday.

My Uncle who was into his game shooting said he needed to go and collect something and said my cousin and I could go with him.

We went across to property which sure was in Derbyshire and my Uncle Bill knocked on the door and a lady answered and led us into the kitchen. Sat there was Jack reading the paper. He reminded me of my Grandad as was really friendly to us lads.

His Wife got me and Steve drinks and Big Jack went and fetched 2 Pheasants for my Uncle.

Here's my memory of big Jack. He coached the team I played for in Leeds (Leeds Ashley Rd-A feeder club for Owls). In one session he wasn't too happy with our goalie's performance at a corner. He organised another corner and he came running in from edge of penalty area and thudded into our goalie who finished up in back of net. Jack knocked him unconscious and the goalie was taken to hospital. Jack walked off the pitch and asked someone for a fag.

He did and to be fair to him he had decent shot in him, when balls needed your foot putting through it, unlike the bloody beach balls they play with now.

Jack's funeral today. Just seen a report on SSN showing an estimated 10,000 people in Ashington lining the funeral procession route, and an interview with local lad Steve Harmison paying a fulsome tribute to him as well.

They've been paying tribute to him in Ireland as well. In Ballina, County Mayo where he had a holiday home for many years, they've unveiled a mural of him about to sink a pint of Guinness.

Lots of love and respect being shown to a great bloke. RIP Big Jack.Salute
