So,

Let's look at who we've got left, just from the official site - Minus those out of contract now.

GK: Wildsmith, Dawson, Jones, Westwood (But I can't see him playing another minute)

Def: Palmer, Van Aken, Borner, Lees, Odubajo, Iorfa, Brennan, Penney, Urhoghide

Mid: Harris, Pelupessy, Bannan, Reach, Luongo, Hughes, Grant, Hunt, Waldock, Shaw

Str: Rhodes

Clearly, we need attacking options. But how many do we think we'll bring in to supplement those players, and/or do you see some of those leaving to add funds to the pot?

Apologies, I did an idiot and put Wickham instead of Rhodes.

Monk also appearing not to write off Lee and Adthe in his ramblings yesterday.

No, and it wouldn't surprise me entirely to see Kieran Lee stay.

If they are on low wages or pay as you play deals can't see a problem in giving both another year. It's not like we'll be building the team round either of them

Ok, so lets say the current management team stay in place and the current 3-5-2 stays in place as well. Also I’m bringing players in on the cheap here as part of a consolidation season. I’m not going for promotion but rather bringing players in I think could do a job and help bring the kids on.

The two current keepers are too much alike. Roughly same age, came through at the same time, and if you swap one for the other you’re not getting much difference. As none of us think Westwood will put a shirt on again (though who knows now his ‘mates’ have gone) we need a more experienced goalkeeper and let one of Dawson and Wildsmith go out on loan, or maybe even let go if the deal is right. There’s not much to choose from, domestically, if we’re doing it on the cheap and (although nobody wants him) I don’t think Joe Hart would come for £15k a week, but that’s the sort of experience we want. I’d look at the loan market and see if anyone around 26-30 with previous is finding game time hard to come by. Nyland, at Villa, will possibly find himself 4th choice next season and he’s got a year left on his contract. Celtic have enquired about Karl Darlow on loan and Neil Etheredge at Cardiff has been bench warming for Alex Smithie most of the season. Both Etheridge and Darlow also have a season left on their contracts.

Defensively, as I’ve mentioned in the other thread, we need a leader and a presence in the middle of that back 3. The problem we’ve had has been the turn around of players across the back line and all three positions need stability that breeds cohesion. Not playing central one game then being moved to the left or right the next game. A back three can be played one of two ways. All three are stoppers and you play narrow, or the left and right are athletic and central is the stopper. We just need someone for maybe a season that can hold it all together and coach the others in how it works. Scott Dann (don’t laugh) maybe 33 but he’s played that central one role and knows that game. He’s also mouthy and a director. He doesn’t have to be the athletic one if you’re playing a left and right around him. He’s the stopper and at 6’ 2” he does that role well.

We need an extra defensive midfielder. Kevin Stewart is currently without a club and his stats for this season, to say he was playing for Hull, are good. 85% tackles won and only 4 yellow cards in 27 games. 76% interception rate as well and he’s someone else who can read the game. If Lee stays then he’s not playing every game. Neither is Luongo if his injuries last season are anything to go by. If Lee goes then you need a replacement and this lad is free. Klopp still thinks of him as one of his regrets (he was part of deal that brought Robinson to Anfield) and says as much in an article written yesterday.

Forward line
There’s talk of Vydra being allowed to go out on loan if Burnley get another striker or two in. He’s only got a year left (with the option of another) but he might be expensive. Lyle Taylor, at time of posting, still hasn’t found a new club and I know he’s tainted but 1 in 2 for Charlton this year is not to be sniffed at. I still wouldn’t go for him though as his attitude at Charlton was suspect to say the least. But it points out what is out there on a freebie.
But this is where I’d look League 1 for a buy and then the Premier league u23s for a loan or two.
I was tracking Freddie Ladapo (14 in 31) and Matt Godden (14 in 26) for another Championship club but that clubs circumstances have changed so I doubt they’ll be in for them. Both players contracted till July 22 but both players on less than £9k a week and mid 20s, so in the age range we want.

The way I see it is that if Monk is still here, there will be further outgoings.

Odubajo was told he was surplus, I think he’ll go.
Reach can’t get a look in, I think he’ll go.
Rhodes was sixth choice from 5 strikers. He’s going to go.

That leaves us with a lot of holes. It then means that probably need a right wing back if Harris and Penney are going to be left. We desperately need a centre half, and an absolute mouthy one.

Midfield wise. It’s all about legs and stoppers. We need a more defensive player who is more physical than what we have. And for me, we need someone who is box to box. At a push, I’d say we need a number 8 or a number 10 to put some pressure on Bannan.

And we absolutely need three strikers who are a mixture. A unit, someone with pace who gets down the sides. A bit of a poacher. I’d even say a 10 too.

That’s a minimum of 7. But ideally 9. No issues if three are loans, but ideall they all need to be under 26. Although I agree with Ty that the centre half could be an older head.

The next question is... will we actually do this type of business? The caveat is that if we don’t strengthen, that squad doesn’t get 40 points next season.

And I agree about the keeper. Westwood’s done and the Dawson and Wildsmith are just not good enough for this division. We keep one, and we need to sign another.

Jackson Irvine, released by Hull. He'd be a decent fit IMO
