April 1964. Peter Swan, Wednesday and England's centre half was suspended by the club pending legal action following the "Bribes Scandal." The club took a gamble and promoted Vic Mobley into the first team. An Oxford lad, he had built up a reputation of being one of the finest defensive prospects at amateur level. The club donated £50 to his amateur side to secure his services.
Mobley impressed from the start and after just 16 games he was selected to play for England against Holland but due to injury he had to sit the game out along with Gordon Banks and Alan Ball. Maurice Norman took Swan's place but broke his leg shortly afterwards, so a vacancy for a World Cup place was beckoning. Mobley was the favourite but had now become injury prone. On 10th April 1965, England played Scotland, and as Mobley had a semi final to play in less than a fortnight's time, Ramsey chose to give Jack Charlton his first cap instead. The rest is history.

Fuck 'em. This city will always be ours.

Signed for Wednesday in 1961 as swans under study according to wiki.

So close to potential world Cup winner but for injuries.

Ended up retiring through injury in his late 20s

Whenever an opponent was breaking up the wing and The Don was absent from his post at left back, the (then) giant figure of Mobley would slowly set course from its moorings and rumble out towards the inteloper, steadily growing in momentum as it advanced towards the appalled attacker. And with every great step the "Whoooaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" from the kop grew to a crescendo.
If the smaller man had common sense he'd cross the ball early, even if there wasn't a team mate there. Otherwise, as so often, man and ball would enter the environs of the South Stand terrace, accompanied by a spray of grass and earth. And this young boy watched on in awe as the big man slowly waddled back to his more familiar environs, job done for the day.

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

Funnily enough, that's exactly how I remember things as well, a brilliant literal description of a snippet of our clubs history which must be remembered.

1966 not 1965

For many years after whenever anyone whacked the ball into the stand my Dad used to say he was “doing a Mobley”
