There was a week to go before the 1990-91 season started, so here's an update on the comings and goings in the close season.

First off, there was a chance of a reprieve following our relegation.

Winners of the play off final Swindon Town were found guilty of financial irregularities and relegated two divisions as a punishment. This was subsequently reduced to just a single division demotion, but still meant that there was a place in the top flight to be filled.

The three candidates were ourselves as the final relegated side, beaten play off finalists Sunderland, and Newcastle who had finished in third place in division two.

Each club thought that they had a strong case, but although I tried to argue ours well in the first fanzine of the new season, I have to be honest and say that I never thought it should really be us. Logic told me it should be the beaten play off finalists, and indeed that was the decision that was reached.

The disappointment was tempered somewhat by the transfer activity, or probably more accurately, the lack of transfer activity. Over half the side must have been prime candidates for a move to a top flight club, but somehow we kept hold of all our key players, with one exception.

Dalian Atkinson, after just one season at Hillsborough, left for Real Sociedad for a £1.75m fee. It was a nice profit on the £450,000 we paid Ipswich for him. The exciting striker had scored 15 times in his 45 appearances for us.

Atkinson's replacement was Paul Williams signed for £600,000 from Charlton. After starting in non-league he had signed for Charlton in 1987, and whilst there impressed enough to get call ups to both England Under 21 and England B. The 25 year old had hit 29 goals whilst at the Valley.

Our other incoming was midfielder Danny Wilson, whom Big Ron persuaded to drop down a division from Luton, who of course had dramatically beaten us to the final place outside the relegation zone back in May.
We paid £200,000 for the 29 year old, who had started his career at Wigan back when the Lancashire club were still in the Norhern Premier. He moved into League football with Bury, but it was with Chesterfield that he made his name, where his form earnt him a move to top flight Nottingham Forest. It didn't work out for him though, and within a year he was on his way to Brighton. After a good three seasons there he left for Luton, were again he was a success, scoring in their 3-2 League Cup final win over Arsenal in 1988.
Incidentally, Howard Wilkinson had tried to sign Wilson for Wednesday from Brighton back in 1984.

Tell you what, if this story had been in the world of fiction, folks would have called it 'corny'.

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

With regard to the Swindon malarky didn't we say that a precedence had been set years before by Peterborough not being relegated in similar circumstances so we didn't think that we would be relegated and didn't really hassle the Football League as we didn't want to annoy them.
Then when they announced Sunderland were getting promoting they said "Wednesday didn't seem that bothered about putting a case forward"
