I had an interesting conversation with my university studying godson a year or two back regarding Kipling being called a racist and his work subjected to 'cancel culture'. Apparently he was racist. That's it!

Next step, book burning.

We must not give opposition teams hope. We have to kill them.

The world is woke mad.
The comments he made were of a time when Stan Boardman was still on national tv, yet society now holds people accountable for things they said 30-40 years ago and beyond.

In India a comedian spent 35 days in jail after being arrested at the start of his set for intent to possibly upset someone. He hadn't told one joke at that time.

We might as well pull every thread where nonce, retard, spacker, special, fuckwit, knobhead, sweetie, darling, diddums, and any other term is written that someone may seem offensive, even if not aimed at them.
And I'm as guilty as the next man

People post to get a reaction. That's what social media has become.
It won't change because, short of Indian/Chinese style authoritarianism, society is too far down the line.

I wonder in 20 years time how my 5 year olds generation will see my view of life and if I'll be pilloried as much as some 70 year olds are today.

It's looking more and more inevitable isn't it. At least most of them will be able to say they earn it.

It's a pity, and a sad reflection of society, that decent folk on here couldn’t have an online platform giving condolences to the family of a 99 year old man without some posters feeling the need to post nasty comments against said person thinking they're clever and edgy, even if on a number of occasions, factually incorrect.

The language and vitriol was pathetic.

Shame on you using a RIP thread in this way.

By all means set up am alternative thread and post your nastiness to your hearts content. It's a free world. The Duke of Edinburgh did fight in the second world War after all to give you that right.

Society (and by extension the world) is cyclical, attitudes come and go and what's popular now has been before and will be again. We all believed in our youth that our generation was better than those that went before and in our later years we'll turn our noses up at the generations that follow which is exactly what your son's generation will think. You will be viewed as a dinosaur because every generation in its youth views the generations older than there's in that way...

While much of the world is, in fact, cyclical, the truth is that societies in which everyone is entitled to speak his mind as he sees fit are, historically speaking, exceedingly rare. The fact that yours (and mine) have been that way for very many generations, now, has quite possibly made us heedless as to its actual scarcity, and to the reality that once conceded, its return is my no means inevitable - or even likely. Being viewed as a dinosaur by our successors is, indeed, almost a surety. But being stifled for it is something entirely different.

I suppose what you have here is those that think the Royal Family are part of the fabric of UK society and others that just see them as part of what is wrong with it.

I am in mindset a republican, perhaps seems at odds with my other political views but that is the case. And I will say illogically I have a dislike for them by association as it was the Queens Silver Jubilee Day that my parents announced they were splitting up.

I am patriotic but would never sing our national anthem. As an atheist republican why would I?

At the same time I can respect that an old chap has passed away, but do not accept he is any different to any other 99 year old father, grandfather, great grandfather.

I don't put the Royal Family on any sort of pedestal.

And I won't feel any guilt in treating his death any different to the rest. I will simply avoid the media nonsense that surrounds it.

My only angst would have been if the Royal Family were to be given special exemption for the funeral arrangements. They aren't

Tbf 1984 is a book I have read about but have never read. It is a vision of a world that is becoming scarily reality.

It is an interesting one because the recent protests in Bristol for example have a lot of merit in the underlying principles. It unfortunately gets hijacked by those with more anarchist intent. The Govt must love those idiots in deflecting the real issues in the intended legislation.

But we sleep walk into acceptance, covid passports being a prime example. You sort of accept the logic but wonder where that could lead.

The problem I have, as highlighted by the David Jason matter, is the complete lack of context and understanding of the comment. The cancel culture attitude is not about discussing the world but closing down opinions you don't agree with and seeking to silence that person. I accept that some people should not be allowed a platform for their views, but it goes way beyond that and they want to be judge and jury thoughtpolice. Not realising that in 20 years time their own views could be similarly silenced.
