I'll hold my hands up. I had an opinion on him that was perhaps very media bias.

Yes he used horrific racial terms at times and that isn't forgivable but what I will say is that he was 99 and a man from a very different lifestyle to us, the elite don't have our multicultural interaction.

I will say my great nan used terms that in her era were common but as we evolve so do our attitudes, we all probably use terms that are likely to be classed
as hate crimes, it is much easier to now offend people than educate them.

The world we inhabit seems to have bred a society that hopes to be offended. Fuck it

Tbf 1984 is a book I have read about but have never read. It is a vision of a world that is becoming scarily reality.

It is an interesting one because the recent protests in Bristol for example have a lot of merit in the underlying principles. It unfortunately gets hijacked by those with more anarchist intent. The Govt must love those idiots in deflecting the real issues in the intended legislation.

But we sleep walk into acceptance, covid passports being a prime example. You sort of accept the logic but wonder where that could lead.

The problem I have, as highlighted by the David Jason matter, is the complete lack of context and understanding of the comment. The cancel culture attitude is not about discussing the world but closing down opinions you don't agree with and seeking to silence that person. I accept that some people should not be allowed a platform for their views, but it goes way beyond that and they want to be judge and jury thoughtpolice. Not realising that in 20 years time their own views could be similarly silenced.

Google “Tempora project”

Now that is scary and the government still denies its existence.

I suppose what you have here is those that think the Royal Family are part of the fabric of UK society and others that just see them as part of what is wrong with it.

I am in mindset a republican, perhaps seems at odds with my other political views but that is the case. And I will say illogically I have a dislike for them by association as it was the Queens Silver Jubilee Day that my parents announced they were splitting up.

I am patriotic but would never sing our national anthem. As an atheist republican why would I?

At the same time I can respect that an old chap has passed away, but do not accept he is any different to any other 99 year old father, grandfather, great grandfather.

I don't put the Royal Family on any sort of pedestal.

And I won't feel any guilt in treating his death any different to the rest. I will simply avoid the media nonsense that surrounds it.

My only angst would have been if the Royal Family were to be given special exemption for the funeral arrangements. They aren't

Good post that. I think a lot of people think you have to like or accept the Royaos to be patriotic, nonsense in my opinion

Interesting view points here and I missed the thread more juicier comments.

I love my country happily sing the national anthem but more for the fact it is my country national anthem as opposed its words or meaning.

I have taken time to understand the history of my country both the taught and untaught versions. I feel more affinity towards a non royalist view of the country than that in which we find our ourselves.

I do find the faux outrage about the jokes going around amusing from fellow subjects who are usually the first to pass similar jokes about other public figure deaths — if you partaken in said jokes about others .. drop the outrage.

Anyway here’s hoping we opt for an early kick off time against Bristol may it work in our favour .. UTO

How anyone can even think of being a republican is beyond me.

President Mandleson? Fuck off.

As someone said, the best thing about the Queen being the Head of State and Commander in Cheif of the ArmeD Forces, is that it meant nobody else could be.

Couldn't agree more. We've arrived here by chance and we seem to have stumbled on as close to perfection as you could get. Others make the laws and she signs off on them without having any real say.
But if perchance we finished up electing a Corbyn type lunatic she could just decide she wouldn't be signing any of his commie laws. Win, win for me.

If any Goverment, "Corbyn lunatic" or Johnson/Patel fascists want laws to go through, do you think they would give a flying fuck what her majesty thought about it?

Yawn.

BTW, anyone bandying about the term Fascist about any of the UK present or past governments clearly has no understanding of the term and swearing just amplifies your ignorance.
