If any Goverment, "Corbyn lunatic" or Johnson/Patel fascists want laws to go through, do you think they would give a flying fuck what her majesty thought about it?
sheffieldblue, 11/04/2021 at 16:47

How is the current government fascist?

How anyone can even think of being a republican is beyond me.

President Mandleson? Fuck off.

As someone said, the best thing about the Queen being the Head of State and Commander in Cheif of the ArmeD Forces, is that it meant nobody else could be.
Andyben, 11/04/2021 at 15:21

Fairly easy to be a republican

I quite like the idea of voting for someone rather than inherited titles.

Don't get me started on hereditary peers

But I would re-set our entire electoral system at the same time to PR and have a proper written constitution

Then you're a mug.

As soon as someone needs to win an election, they're in somebody else's debt, completely in their pocket, wherher big business, unions or something more sinister.

Agree with you. Our electoral system is in desperate need of reform - and I think we could have had it in 2010 if Clegg had used his brain. I don’t see it happening now though.

With regard to the Royal Family, as a nation we’ve been spoiled with the Queen. I’m not a fan of the Royal Family but I’d never criticise our Queen. She has served her nation impeccably.

Once the Queen steps down (or, shudder the thought, passes) is when I become concerned. There’s nobody with her class remaining in the Royal Family, or who can hold a candle to her in terms of her standing as a role model. I also don’t see the next ruler of this country commanding anything like the same respect across the Commonwealth (or the rest of the world for that matter) that Queen Elizabeth II does either.

And just to keep within topic - RIP Prince Philip.

I think if we started the country from scratch now you wouldn’t decide to have a monarchy. However that is a different thing to whether we should get rid of them now we have them.

In my opinion they do more good than harm, financially I think that has been “proven” somewhere but the amount spent on them is not really significant from a public spending perspective.

They are a part of our country and its rich history. We should be looking to celebrate that sort of thing, not throw it away. It would be a bit like Wednesday moving from Hillsborough, it may be seen as progress but we would lose a lot along the way.

But I do respect the republican opinion, mainly for what I said first.

Whole world's a big stupid mess full of selfish people. An asteroid smacking into us wiping out mankind would be the best possible outcome.

We still vote for elected leaders. The queen doesn’t make policy or decides If we go to war.

You watched Greenland or summat?
For me I run my own business I earn what I want I pay taxes on what my accountant tells me to pay the royal family has no bearing on my life at all.
I just respect the fact I’ve been born into a society that has a 1000yr old monarchy and country that’s never been invaded.
And that’s won 2 world wars.

There was a vote in 2011 for the Alternative Vote Referendum and was defeated 68% to 32%

Mind you, Clegg was too busy being duplicitous and basking in his uncontrollable hubris to care one iota.
