Centre Backs On The Menu???

As transfer speculation begins to build, news is turning to what may or may not happen at Hillsborough this week as we have been linked with three defenders.

Despite Wednesday being in the cusp of beating the club's clean sheet record for the past three seasons, but we're hardly overflowing with centre backs and with club captain Glenn Loovens not getting any younger, it's an area which many have suggested has needed strengthening for the past few years.

Yesterday it was reported by Sky Sports journalists that the Wednesday have placed an unsuccessful bid for Cardiff City centre back, Sean Morrison, which was in the region of £3m. The 26 year old Has been with the Bluebirds since moving from Reading in the summer of 2014 for an undisclosed fee which some believe was £4m and has since featured 120 times for his current club.

Today, Wednesday have been linked with two other players, one of which was strongly linked with a move to Sheffield last summer but plumped for bigger a wage packet in Newcastle. Grant Hanley was believed to have spoken to the Owls before deciding to move to the North East, but it hasn't been the most successful of decisions as things stand for the former Blackburn defender. The Scottish international only played 16 times for the Magpies last term, but its not likely that his signature would come on the cheap despite it seeming that he's out of favour with Rafa Benitez.

The third option is Daniel Ayala, the former Liverpool centre back was rumoured to be interesting the Owls back in a January when the Owls were looking at bringing Jordan Rhodes down from Middlesbrough but only the strikers move slightly south materialised. Ayala has been a player who many supporters have said they'd like to see bolstering the defence at Hillsborough for some time but like Hanley, his number of appearances have been limited over the last 12 months for his parent club, however most of his appearances came in the Premier League as opposed to the Championship.

Whether any of these links do materialise remains to be seen but it's an area as mentioned before has needed strengthening for some time, and some may say that should any of these three were to join the club then they would add steel to an already proven Championship defence.

Come discuss this and everything else Wednesday related on our forum which you can find HERE.....
