Cardiff City V Sheffield Wednesday Preview: Team News, Predicted Line-ups And Manager Thoughts Ahead Of Season Opener

The full lowdown on what can be expected as The Bluebirds host The Owls to kick of the 2020/21 Championship campaign.

For Sheffield Wednesday, starting the campaign on -12 points, a strong start is vital in what is a tough first month back in action. Meanwhile, Neil Harris’ Cardiff City will be hoping to pick up where they left off after making the play-offs last term.

Garry Monk has overseen a vast overhaul of the playing staff at Hillsborough over the short summer break, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Chey Dunkley, Elias Kachunga and Josh Windass have signed permanently while Izzy Brown has joined on loan.

Brown has looked particularly dangerous against in their pre-season game against Leicester City and against Walsall in the Carabao Cup where he dispatched the all-important penalty in the shootout.

Dele-Bashiru also made what was both his Sheffield Wednesday and professional debut at The Banks Stadium where he showed glimpses of why he was held in such high regard at Manchester City.

The hosts certainly set sail with the top six in mind and while they’ve had a slightly shorter break than The Owls due to their play-off exploits, Harris has kept on top of proceedings in his first summer as City chief.

Proactive work in the transfer market has seen right back Jordi Osei-Tutu make the switch from Arsenal, while the shelled out £2m on Kieffer Moore from Wigan Athletic. A third exciting addition has come in the form of Sheyi Ojo.

The Bluebirds performed well and won comfortably in their pre-season fixtures against lower league opponents but defeat to Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup did take a slight shine off things heading into the real stuff this weekend.

Team News

Cardiff could be without two key players in Lee Tomlin and Joe Ralls, both of whom have missed the entirety of pre-season but have trained this week so may play some part in this one.

Elsewhere, Nathaniel Mendez-Liang had his contract terminated on Wednesday without explanation leaving the wide area a particular problem for Neil Harris.

Chey Dunkley will remain on the sidelines while he continues the final stages of his recovery from last season’s double leg break, Monk believes he should be back in full training within 10 days.

Youngster Osaze Orughide remains on the comeback trail and is set to resume full training this week.

Garry Monk has no other fresh injury concerns ahead of the curtain raiser in South Wales and told the media in his Thursday press conference that new signing Kachunga is fit and available.

Predicted Lineups

Cardiff City (4-3-3): Smithies; Osei-Tutu, Morrison, Nelson, Bennett; Pack, Bacuna, Vaulks; Murphy, Moore, Hoilett.

Sheffield Wednesday (3-5-2): Dawson; Iorfa, Lees, Borner; Harris, Luongo, Bannan, Brown, Penney; Windass, Kachunga.

Manager’s Thoughts

Neil Harris: “It’s a shame the fans won’t be there. We miss them and certainly did so in the play-off games.

“I want to make sure there’s a team on the pitch they’re proud of – that’s always the aim.

“The personnel we have at the moment within the group have got fantastic attributes to be a successful team, and it’s down to me and my coaching staff to get the best out of the group.”

Garry Monk: “We’ll be starting with a nothing to lose attitude. We know we have to try to put points on the board and we will try to set out to use that as an advantage.

“We have to be organised and structured, but we have got to have a no fear attitude. We have to attack it head on.”

“We know it is going to be difficult and there will be ups and downs, it’s a long season, but we are going to try and get off to a good start.”
