BRING IT ON - CHARLTON

BRING IT ON - CHARLTON

So the arduous trip to the Valley beckons this weekend for Wednesday, what shall we expect?
Well we speak to Charlton fan, Daniel Macionis, from the Addicks website, Charlton Life about all things Athletic.

1)What were/are your expectations for the Addicks this season?

I think we all knew we were unlikely to repeat the start to last season and be in and around the top 2 for most of the year but the play offs were a realistic target. They still are.

2) Last season you conceded goals 26 away from home all season, and you have conceded half that amount already. What's changed?

It is hard to put it down to one factor, but the defence has been a lot less settled this season. Simon Francis at RB and Gary Doherty have taken time to settle and gel whilst the ever dependable Christian Dailly has had injury problems.

3) Akpo Sodje, we know what he's capable of when he's fit. But how has he fitted in at The Valley?

Akpo divides opinions; this season he has scored in his only league start so may count himself unlucky not to have played more. However we saw glimpses last season of how much of a threat he can be when firing. It is a case of consistency, both in terms of form and fitness for Akpo, I am sure however he will have a bigger role to play later in the season.

4) Another Owl was in your ranks until the summer, Deon Burton, how much of a loss was it to see him leave?

It is not just his goals we miss, even though Paul Benson has found his shooting boots, Burton’s general hold up play and link up was excellent last season. He is a very intelligent footballer and someone who was pivotal to the way we played. If he had not had injuries last season especially around February/March, I think we may have turned some of the draws into wins and got promotion automatically.

5) If you could realistically sign one player to make a difference to the team, who would it be and why?

I think our midfield, especially in the centre lacks a creative spark. Since Bailey left there is no-one to really drive the team on and get a crucial goal.So I would go for someone like like Danny Whittaker at Chesterfield or Nicky Law at Rotherham, I think could step up and make a difference to our midfield. Wanted to say Adam Lallana just behind our front two, but not very realistic.

6) Even now some of our support still see us as a Premier League Club, is that the case at Charlton too?

Possibly a minority, but I think the majority are more realistic and know that the Premiership was a different world. In essence, I think mid-long term we should be looking to establish ourselves back in The Championship before we start dreaming of the big league again.

7) What do you know about Sheffield Wednesday?

I know they are a huge club for this level with a loyal and large fan base. Like ourselves, Wednesday have struggled since Premiership relegation and have had even worse financial issues but I think you have a decent manager and some talented players for this level so expect you to be there or thereabouts. Oh and your stadium like ours, is very impressive for most levels.

8) Any memories, good or bad about games against the Owls?

In 1999, we needed to win at The Valley to stay up but you guys won 1-0 and we were down. Even though, we would have been relegated anyway, that is the most poignant memory of Wednesday as it was my first relegation and after beating Villa 4-3 the week before, I really believed we had a chance. Your fans rubbed it in that day that were relegated.

9) Team News?

We will probably be unchanged from Carlisle, Striker Joe Anyinsah was taken off last week possibly with a knock so hopefully he will be ok whilst tactically, we perhaps need a change at the back after 7 goals conceded in two game. Maybe Jon Fortune will earn a recall.

10) Score prediction.

1-1, Charlton to score first. Weaver to have a blinder.
