Bannan Seals New Owls Deal

Wednesday have this afternoon confirmed that captain Barry Bannan has signed a new contract to stay with the club.

The 31-year-old Scottish international who has been with the club since 2015 has put pen to paper on a deal until the summer of 2023 with The Owls. The confirmation of Bannan extending his stay at Hillsborough comes as a timely shot in the arm after the recent disappointment of hearing of promising youngster Liam Shaw’s impending summer departure to Celtic.

With so many of the current squad seeing their current contracts running out in the summer, and with all the conjecture the lack of a plan over the past few weeks, it’s the first tangible sign of some foundations for the near future being laid down.

It has to be said though, whilst retaining the services of Bannan is a positive to many there are some who also think it should have been time for the diminutive midfielder to move to pastures new.

Now, it’s fair to say that the Scot hasn’t always been that dynamic, quick footed, instinctive midfielder that we first saw in his maiden season with the club. Naturally there are many possibilities for that, from different managers with different ideas and tactics to a host of various teammates with arguably very different qualities to those in that first season. But there’s no doubt he’s still got the ability on his day to dominate and carry us to victory, albeit he seems to play a lot deeper than he used to which makes him far less effective.

When Barry Bannan is ‘on it’, we generally are too. He can be and has been the heartbeat of the side and that’s what we need right now, starting this weekend against Birmingham. His signature could arguably be a sign to prospective additions to the club that it’s not all negative at Sheffield Wednesday right now. Did the media hubbub around the lack of full pay put people off joining in January and now what many would consider our marquee player confirms his stay, that could silence that doubt and make people a little more confident that Wednesday are the club for them... Who knows.

But retaining his services is far from a negative... He's certainly better in our squad than picking holes in it in the shirt of someone else.
